Indie and Classic Wedding Songs: Reception

For our reception, we mixed classic songs with a few indie ones. We let my dad and Chris's mom choose their respective songs, which added another unexpected layer of meaning to the process (the back-and-forth with each parent and one another about song choice and the lyrics of each contender was time-consuming, but so worth it in the end).

Some choices were easy. Nothing was going in place of Beyonce for the bouquet toss, and we decided on Peter Gabriel's version of Book of Love right after we got engaged.

The David Bowie, Edward Sharp, and Icona Pop picks all came within the last few weeks before the wedding. Last-minute inspiration was definitely working in our favor. (Also, I really recommend doing a more wider known penultimate dance song (Home) and then picking it up a dance-y notch with a faster last one. It felt like the entire wedding hall was shaking when Icona Pop started playing with all our guests already on the dance floor ready to go after the group Home sing-along/dance-it-up.)

Oh My God, It's a Mirage: MCA Tribute

S: I need to file this video away in Awesome Things to Do While Babysitting My Nephews. Such a cute idea and also a tribute to a great artist, MCA of the Beastie Boys. I bet we could do a more lo-fi version with my iPhone video camera...

In middle school, me and my four best friends stayed up all night once writing letters to our favorite Beastie Boy. This took hours and hours of careful penning. I wrote mine to Mike D. (Why? He was the cutest! This was middle school.) It was just a ridiculously fun night, one that sticks out among countless good times.

When I saw this picture in The Guardian, it made me really happy.

SXSW 2012

S: Chris and I had such an awesome South by Southwest this year. I made a playlist of all the great bands we found out about or saw in our adventures here on Spotify. Here's us at the French Legation. Warby Parker curated a great three days early in the week, with bands like Yellow Ostrich and Y La Bamba playing. And we got supercool red roll-up blankets for free! Freebie icing on the music cake!

S: Chris snapped a photo of me watching Savoir Adore at the Wild Honey Pie showcase at Uncorked. Every band that played the showcase was awesomesauce.

S: Jukebox the Ghost playing at Uncorked. The band did a Whitney Houston cover that blew my mind.

S: We ended our six-day SXSW dayfest extravaganza at South by San Jose where Ben Kweller played the second to last set of the day.
